Pictures show scale of damage after Darlington car crash

Durham Police closed McMullen Road and Tornado Way after the crash involving a number of vehicles.

The incident is believed to have happened at about 1pm. The roads were closed for just under two hours, reopening at about 2.45pm.

The back driver side wheel of a white Kia had been ripped off due to the crash. The car, which was on Tornado Way, had also lost its back bumper and left-side wing mirror.

Another vehicle involved in the collision was a black Land Rover, with the driver’s side back wheel resting at about a 90 degree angle. A grey Vauxhall also looked to be damaged because of the crash.

Pictures showed the driver’s side of the Vauxhall badly crumpled. The airbags in the car had also been deployed.

Pictures also showed debris strewn across pavements, including a wheel, bumper and wing mirror.

Workers in the car showrooms on McMullen Road spoke of hearing a massive bang.

One said police arrived “instantly” after the crash.

Another worker said: “I heard a massive bang. It was that loud I thought a car had come off one of the trucks. It sounded like a bomb had gone off.”

Highways Maintenance teams arrived once the road had reopened to clear the debris and to put sand on the road.

Durham Police and North East Ambulance Service have both been contacted about the crash.
