A large amount of waste was fly-tipped across two days in this town, according to the council. Residents have been urged to report dumped household waste.

Two piles of household waste have been found just metres away from each other in a Cambridgeshire town. Mattresses, a shelving unit, and a ring-binder file are among the items dumped on the street in Wisbech.

Cllr Steve Tierney, Fenland District Council portfolio holder with responsibility for street cleansing, explained that a lot of waste was fly-tipped in Wisbech last Wednesday (November 19) and added to the following day.

Two mattresses were dumped alongside what appears to be a cabinet and some planks of wood in Orange Grove. Wisbech resident Chris Cross took a photo of the fly tip last Thursday (November 20). He said he believed it had remained on the street for several days.

A shelving unit, a ring-binder file, and what appears to be a dismantled desk were left a three-minute walk away near Wellington Terrace, off Church Road, Wisbech.

Mr Cross took a photo of the second fly tip on Monday (November 24), and said he believed it had been dumped on the same day.

Cllr Steve Tierney, Fenland District Council portfolio holder with responsibility for street cleansing, said on Monday (November 24): “It’s always hugely disappointing when people fly-tip in our community. We urge people to report it to us directly and quickly to allow us to both seek evidence to link it back to the people responsible and clear the mess.

“We prosecute where possible to show that our communities won’t put up with this. Our cleansing teams are out every day, barring Christmas Day, working to keep our communities clean and tidy.

“We also offer a reliable, low-cost bulky waste collection service so people never need to resort to either fly-tipping themselves or using someone unreputable who’ll dump the waste.”

Speaking of the Orange Grove waste, he added: “On this occasion, we haven’t disturbed the site immediately to allow us to gather evidence. A large amount of waste was fly-tipped on November 19 and added to on November 20.

“The site will be cleared tomorrow on Tuesday (November 25). We’re appealing for witnesses to come forward and are writing to residents to see if anyone saw anything to help in our inquiries.
