Pilot killed after helicopters collide in mid-air over New Jersey | News US

Two helicopters collided over New Jersey killing one person and leaving another fighting for life in hospital.

The fatal crash between an Enstrom F-28A and Enstrom 280C helicopter occurred over Hammonton Municipal Airport at around 11.25am local time.

Firefighters extinguished flames from one of the choppers after it had hit the ground.

Footage of the crash shows a helicopter spiralling out of the sky following the collision.

Another clip showed a huge column of thick dark smoke rising from the debris of one of the helicopters.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the only people on board each vehicle were their respective pilots.

It is unknown where either of the helicopters were heading.

While the wreckage of the red helicopter was shown in pictures largely intact and in several large pieces, the other chopper was heavily destroyed and burnt.

Fire Department Chief Sean Macri told CNN that both victims had been airlifted to a local hospital after the two vehicles crashed in a field.

Hammonton is a town with a population of around 15,000 located in Atlantic County in the southern part of the state, 35 miles from Philadelphia in neighbouring Pennsylvania.

The National Transportation Safety Board, which investigates US air accidents, was informed.
