There are some returning names on the party’s list
Plaid Cymru has published the full list of its candidates for the upcoming Senedd election. The party, led by Rhun ap Iorwerth, is expected to have its best ever result in May 2026. Polls show it could be the largest party, or a close second to Reform UK, with Labour’s vote projected to collapse.
The election is in May 2026, and will be totally different to any previous devolved election. There will be new constituencies and a new voting system. Instead of the current mix of constituency and regional seats, there will 16 constituencies which will each elect six Senedd members.
Each party can field up to eight candidates. For our free daily briefing on the biggest issues facing the nation sign up to the Wales Matters newsletter here
The most recent polling put Plaid Cymru in top spot. The polling, released by ITV Cymru Wales/Barn Cymru, puts Plaid Cymru and Reform UK almost equally matched with just 1% between them. In terms of seats, Plaid could take 38 of the 96 seats, with Reform UK in second with 37. Labour would be trailing in third with just 11.
The party has now published its full list of candidates. The headlines are that former leader Adam Price is third in the Sir Gaerfyrddin constituency, behind current Senedd colleague Cefin Campbell and former AM Nerys Evans.
Former chief executive Dafydd Trystan tops the list in Caerdydd Ffynnon Taf. The higher someone is on the list, the more likely they are to be elected, although given Plaid Cymru’s polling, the party is expected to get multiple seats in each constituency.
Luke Fletcher, a current regional MS for south Wales west, only secured third place on the Pen-y-bont Bro Morgannwg list.
Plaid Cymru Leader Rhun ap Iorwerth said: “I’m thrilled that we have such an outstanding team of Plaid Cymru candidates, deeply rooted in their communities and ready to work tirelessly to earn the trust and support of people across Wales.
“The next Senedd election is a historic opportunity. Labour have given up on Wales, and our nation urgently needs new leadership – both in how we are treated within the UK and how our government works for the people of Wales.
“Plaid Cymru offers that new leadership.
“It is our chance to elect, for the first time, a government and a First Minister from a made in Wales party who will stand up relentlessly for Wales, improve our NHS, support families with the cost of living, expand childcare, and help businesses thrive.
“This election is also about Wales’ future. The threat of Reform cannot be ignored. Polls show it is a two-horse race to be the largest party, and only Plaid Cymru can prevent Reform from dragging Wales and Welsh politics backwards.
“This is a team ready to deliver positive change and defend Wales’ interests. We will work tirelessly for every community across the country.”
