The Mayor says that more investment needs to be put into the city’s transport

A new bus depot for a Cambridgeshire city has taken a step closer to becoming a reality. The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority approved a recommendation on Monday (January 5) to fund the next stages of a new bus depot for Peterborough.

The combined authority backed the scheme’s outline business case, advanced work to buy the land for the depot and produce a full business case for the development. Mayor Paul Bristow said a new depot is “much needed” in Peterborough.

He added: “The current depot is poorly located and holds back regeneration on Lincoln Road and the surrounding area. To make Peterborough a better place to live and work, we need to invest in better transport.

“This depot will be a big contributor and it’s important we put ourselves in a position to secure the right site quickly. It’s all part of my plan to revive our city centre and get Peterborough and the region moving.”

The combined authority board will consider the recommendation at its meeting on January 28. The funding recommended for approval to buy the land is up to £7.6 million of the total project cost of up to £20.6 million.

Any agreement to purchase land is planned to be put before the board for approval in March. The combined authority has been working with Peterborough City Council to develop the project.

It is an important part of transport improvements in the Local Growth Plan (LGP), which was published in late 2025. In the LGP, Peterborough was identified as one of four areas with enormous growth potential.
