Plans to build 25 homes on site of Easington Colliery school
Durham County Council’s Housing Delivery Team has filed a planning application for the development on the old Easington Colliery School grounds on Seaside Lane.
Formerly a Grade II listed school, the site was brought back into public ownership after being a hub for vandalism in the years following the school’s closure in 1997, before plans were approved to tear it down in 2020.
The plan is for a mix of homes, including 21 two-bedroom, two three-bedroom, and two more with four bedrooms or more, along with some Tyneside flats.
It includes areas for parking, with 52 spaces planned in total.

Planners have stated that no new public roads or rights of way will be created, though new vehicle and pedestrian access is part of the proposal.
The location of the proposed housing estate is surrounded by terraced houses and close to various transport links and local amenities, the Design and Access Statement states.
Plans also outline a central courtyard layout complete with a communal green space.
Every home will be fitted with air source heat pumps and photovoltaic technology to achieve an Energy Performance Certificate rating of ‘A’.
The local community has already participated in a consultation event, providing feedback, with further input gathered online and via post.
Durham County Council’s planning officers are set to make a decision on the proposal in the coming weeks.
