Plans to turn Crook convent into home approved by council
Chris Hepburn, the applicant, received the green light from Durham County Council on November 26, allowing the transformation of the building at 33 Church Hill, Crook.
Proposals include changing the convent into a private home and replacing the roof. A dormer window will also be replaced with a roof light.
Durham County Council set conditions for the approval, saying work must start within three years and comply with the submitted plans.
The convent is a ‘notable building’ and is adjacent to two Grade II listed buildings.
Proposed changes were found to have no adverse impact on its heritage and design, according to the Fast Track Officer Report.
Initial plans for solar panels on the rear were removed during the application process.
A heritage statement by AB Heritage Ltd from July 2024 assessed the convent house as a heritage asset of medium significance, while the church nearby is of high significance.
