“Thankfully, our officer was not injured but this was reckless in the extreme.”
Police have made two separate arrests for driving while unfit as part of ongoing efforts to improve road safety. There has been increased police visibility and patrols across the wider Co Fermanagh area and others towns in Northern Ireland as part of the PSNI’s Christmas safety drive called Op Season’s Greetings. The first arrest was in Kesh on Friday night, 5th December. Officers on mobile patrol suspected that the driver of a red Seat Leon, parked in a secluded car park off the Muckross Road, was under the influence of cannabis while in charge of the vehicle.

He was arrested, taken into custody for questioning and later bailed to allow for further police enquiries. Meanwhile, the second arrest was at a filling station in the Queen Street area of Enniskillen this morning, Saturday 6th December, shortly after 6.30am.
Officers approached a black Vauxhall Insignia to speak to its driver, however, he attempted to speed off from police. As he reversed, mounting the footpath in his haste to make off, an officer had to hold on to the door frame to avoid being run over. Superintendent Pete Cunningham said: “Thankfully, our officer was not injured but this was reckless in the extreme. We arrested the driver on suspicion of dangerous driving and a host of other alleged offences included driving while unfit through drink of drugs and not having a driving licence. He remains in custody. “Drink or drug driving is illegal and puts lives at serious risk. We will continue with increased patrols and enforcement in this busy pre-Christmas period to reassure the public and prevent further harm. “We all have a role to play here and we’re asking motorists to drive responsibility and for any concerns to be reported to us on 101 or 999 in an emergency.”
