Police vehicle smashes into railings as other car left crushed in crash during ‘pursuit’ in Manchester

Oldham Road was closed off for a number of hours following the crash

A police vehicle smashed into railings after it struck another car during a ‘pursuit’ in Manchester on Monday evening (January 12). The incident occurred on Oldham Road, near Miles Platting, shortly after 6pm.

It’s understood a police car had been actively following another vehicle before the crash, which involved another black car. Both vehicles were left badly damaged, with the front bumper torn off one vehicle before the police car appeared to hit a wall and some railings.

Videos from the scene showed multiple emergency vehicles in attendance, including paramedics from the North West Ambulance Service and rescue crews from the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service.

Oldham Road was taped off from Thorp Road to Dean Lane, near Monsall and Miles Platting. It’s understood those involved sustained minor injuries. Two fire engines were also sent to the scene, along with an Enhanced Rescue Unit from the fire service.

The Manchester Evening News understands that police were in the process of pursuing another motorist before the crash occurred.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: “At 6.05pm this evening (Monday 12 January), we received reports of an RTC between a vehicle and one of our police vehicles on Oldham Road, Manchester.

“Emergency services arrived quickly to ensure the safety of the area and the road is now re-open. The full extent of the injuries are currently being assessed but initially seems to be minor injuries.”

A spokesperson for the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service added: “At 6.05pm this evening (Monday 12 January 2026), two fire engines from Manchester Central and Philips Park fire stations, and the Enhanced Rescue Unit from Leigh Community Fire Station, were called to attend a road traffic collision involving two vehicles on Oldham Road, Manchester.

“Crews arrived quickly and worked alongside colleagues from Greater Manchester Police to make the area safe. Firefighters were in attendance for approximately 45 minutes.”
