Policewoman punched in the throat by man who was fleeing car crash scene as two arrested

A MAN and a woman have been arrested after a policewoman was punched in the throat responding to an early morning car crash.

Cops were scrambled to Lower Gornal in Dudley, Birmingham, at around 5:30am this morning.

The alarm was raised after a Ford Ranger truck got into an accident in the residential area.

When officers arrived at the scene they spotted a man walking away from the area.

Cops tried to nab the fleeing individual and got into a confrontation with him as he tried to climb into a Range Rover.

During the confrontation a policewoman tried to stop the individual from getting into the motor and was punched in the throat.

After the officer was hit the Range Rover, which was driven by another person, successfully fled the scene.

A pursuit was launched with traffic and drone units trying to track down the occupants of the swanky 4×4.

Eventually the two people were located and officers swooped on them to make an arrest.

Both suspects were caught in the Swindon area of South Staffordshire.

Just two hours later, at around 7:30am, a man aged 46 was arrested alongside a woman aged 48.

The man was taken into custody on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker.

The woman was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

A Range Rover was also recovered amid the arrest.

Both suspects remain in custody, and the officer was thankfully not seriously injured.

West Midlands Police said: “We’ve arrested two people after one of our officers was attacked as she responded to reports a car had crashed into a wall in Dudley today.

“We were called to Robert Street, Lower Gornal, just before 5.30am after the crash, involving a Ford Ranger.

“A man was seen walking away from the scene and officers arrived within minutes.

“An officer was punched in the throat as she tried to stop the man from getting into a nearby Range Rover driven by a second person.

“The Range Rover made off, but officers including traffic and drones unit, worked quickly and found two suspects in the Swindon area of South Staffordshire.

“At around 7.30am, a man aged 46 was arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker and drink-driving, while a woman aged 48 was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

“A Range Rover was also recovered. Both suspects remain in custody, and the officer was thankfully not seriously injured.”
