Mikel Arteta is expected to rotate his side today for their FA Cup third round clash with Portsmouth today.

It was a long, draining festive period for the Gunners but they held their nerve, still sat top of the Premier League despite dropping points against Liverpool on Thursday.

They also booked their place in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup, with a first leg away to Chelsea awaiting on Wednesday. Mikel Arteta will have one eye firmly on that game and will surely make use of the formidable squad he has assembled at Fratton Park.

Arteta has kept his faith in Viktor Gyokeres despite his return of one goal from open play in his last 11. Gabriel Jesus has shone off the bench since his return to fitness and will be in line to start ahead of the Swede. Kai Havertz could also return to play a role off the bench.

Noni Madueke and Gabriel Martinelli could come in for Bukayo Saka and Leandro Trossard while Eberechi Eze will be desperate to return to the starting XI.

The former Crystal Palace star was an unused substitute over Christmas and New Year despite the frantic run of fixtures and hasn’t started a game in almost a month.

Ethan Nwaneri hasn’t even made the last three squads with his three starts this season coming in the Carabao Cup and Champions League.

Like Myles Lewis-Skelly, he has been the victim of the club’s big summer spending but will hope to be called upon today.

With Riccardo Calafiori and Cristhian Mosquera still not available, there might not be much room for changes at the back.

Might Arteta be tempted to turn to 16-year-old Marli Salmon? The centre-half will at the very least be an option off the bench.

Arsenal XI to face Portsmouth – Metro prediction

This is the first of four away games in four competitions across nine days for Arsenal so expect Arteta to make full use of the players he has at his disposal.

With the exception of his two centre-halves, he could change his entire starting side.
