Three Poundland stores in Scotland are set to be permanently closed by early next year. It comes as the budget retail chain has announced a fresh wave of closures as part of its major restructuring plan.
The high street giant has been making major changes to its business this year following its sale in a £1 deal to the Gordon Brothers in June. A major part of the overhaul will see the firm reduce its entire UK estate from 800 to between 650 and 700 stores.
So far, more than 30 Poundland stores are said to have been permanently shuttered, with multiple branches across Scotland affected. As of late last week, a further 14 for the end of 2025 and early 2026 were confirmed – and it includes another Scottish site.
The firm’s Coatbridge branch has been earmarked for closure on February 8, 2026. It will mean that, by early next year, more than 100 Poundland sites will have closed as part of the restructure, the Retail Gazette reports.
It comes on top of a further 15 closures that are still set to take place across the UK by the end of January 2026. This includes two Scots sites, with the first closure in Kilmarnock closing by January 5, which will be followed by Edinburgh’s Cameron Toll based branch in January 20.
The three upcoming Scottish closures will join a host of Poundland stores across the country that have been shuttered in the past few months. This includes sites that were previously based in Port Glasgow, Broxburn and Perth.
Clearance sales are said to be underway at all of the affected locations, offering up to 40 percent off, although this could vary depending on the location. In October, we reported that ‘everything must go’ sales were spotted at select branches that have now been closed for good.
It has been reported that Poundland’s UK country manager Darren MacDonald is said to have noted “how disappointing it is when we leave a store,” adding that the additional markdowns would “help us leave locations we’re leaving with pride”.
The move comes as Poundland continues to ramp up its efforts in a bid to win back customers. On top of announcing closures, the discounter has also brought in major changes as part of its efforts to “simplify and refocus” its business.
This has included reintroducing its popular single pound pricing unit, with many products across the UK part of its business returning to three price points – £1, £2 and £3.
As part of its move to refocus its core model, the business also ended its Poundland Perks loyalty scheme, while also closing down its website for online shopping orders, with customers now only able to check store opening hours and what’s available to buy in store.
The changes all make up part of Poundland’s restructuring programme after it was sold from former owners Pepco to former Laura Ashley owners the Gordon Brothers for just £1 earlier this year.
Following the move, the high street chain narrowly avoided falling into administration in August after the high-court approved its plan to shutter down select stores across the UK in a bid to help the failing business.
