You Don’t Know You’re Born refuses to sugar-coat the realities of parenting
It’s not too often that listeners get to enjoy a podcast from a group of Northern powerhouses, but in You Don’t Know You’re Born that’s exactly what the audience will get. Emmerdale’s Danny Miller has teamed up with former Coronation Street star Brooke Vincent and Capital Radio host Wingman for a new parenting podcast.
You Don’t Know You’re Born delves into the realities of being a parent, and is perfect for anyone who catches themselves saying “it wasn’t like this in my day!” There’s no sugar-coating what it’s really like to be parents. With different opinions, different children, and no topics off the table, it’s certainly a treat for the ears.
Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, the trio gave an insight into what it’s really like working as friends on a podcast together.
Asked how the idea came about, Danny shared: “It’s a bit of a weird one because it kind of just like naturally happened. Nigel and I do Albert’s Bookshelf, but me and Brooke we both went for a job together in a podcast.
“But we didn’t get it, I was like, should we do our own? So that’s kind of how we’re on here.”
Brooke added: “I think what’s really funny though, considering how it has organically happened, we all kind of had the same sense of humour., which is quite a northern humour. We have our jokes, and yeah, it just really works. I mean, we’re having a great time.”
The trio shared that they’re open to chatting about anything that happens during the week, as Nigel exclaimed: “There’s always something going on that’s worth a chat. More often than not, what you’re going through, other people have been through it as well. We’ve got three different views of things and opinions that we’re happy to discuss.”
When asked how their families find the podcast, Danny quipped: “I get a lot of grunts, like ‘I’m glad you said that’. No, but I try my best unless I get carried away with it.
“That’s the easy thing to do, is forget that you’re actually putting this out to the public. I tend to have a conversation with these two, forget about it, then hear it back and go ‘why did I say that.”
He added: “My family seem to love it.” Nigel interjected: “That’s one of the best things about doing something with your mates as well, because you do feel like you’re just chatting in a pub. You forget that the mics are there and the cameras are on.”
It appears there’s almost no topic off limit for the trio, as Brooke shared: “If a topic comes in, we wouldn’t really shy away from it. I wouldn’t say things are like off topic, we just find humour in everyday chaos with the kids.
“It’s real life, and that’s why people listen. They’re listening to the times where you do snap at your partner, or when you walk into the kitchen and say ‘shut up’ to yourself!”
Danny continued: “I think certain things I wouldn’t want to talk about and remain private, which obviously wouldn’t do now, because that would defeat the object, but the ultimate goal, certainly for me, and I know these guys agree as well, is to have a laugh, to enjoy it, to talk openly about stuff.
“I don’t want to get too emotional in things, I do enough of that at Emmerdale. I feel more like I need to just sort of show a bit more of the fun side of me as a dad and me as a person, and I think that matches with these guys as well.”
In terms of their popularity on the podcast so far, Danny added: “I always think it’s a little bit like therapy here. Everyone has something to say, so why not let other people relate to it?”
Speaking about the best part of the podcast, Nigel declared: “Just how open everyone is, how willing to talk about all the different topics that these two have. Although we obviously already had a relationship before this, it’s just ace. It’s real life, and real chaos.”
