He has described her as his “my best friend, my rock, my guiding light, my world” in a tribute on social media.

The full tribute on Instagram reads: “Heartbroken to share that Joan, my wife and partner for 50 years, has passed away.

“She was the most wonderful mum and grandmum our kids and grandkids could have ever wished for.

“She was my best friend, my rock, my guiding light, my world.

“Love you forever, Joan x.”

Joan was Richard’s second wife, having previously married Kristen Tomassi in 1972 before divorcing her in 1979.

In 1976, he met Joan Templeman, and they had three children, Clare, who lived for four days, Holly and a son, Sam.

The pair were married in 1989 on Necker Island, found in the British Virgin Islands, which is entirely owned by the businessman.

Others have sent their well-wishes to Richard Branson following his wife’s death.

Brave Wilderness host Mark Vins said: “Very sorry for your loss Richard. This is very sad news. My heartfelt condolences to you and your family.”

American model Christie Brinkley wrote: “Heartfelt condolences to you and your loved ones.. May your happy memories comfort you.”

Australian radio host Kris Fade added: “Our prayers and thoughts are with you and the family. Behind every great man, there is a greater woman.

“She will forever be with us in the legacy you both have created. Love from all your Virgin Family.”

Dragons Den star and fellow businessman Peter Jones also sent his thoughts to the family, saying: “My deepest condolences Richard to you and the family.”

Virgin shared Branson’s post to its Instagram stories with a heart emoji.
