The WRU chair spoke at the union’s AGM on Sunday following Wales’ humiliation against the Springboks
Richard Collier-Keywood’s reaction to Wales’ defeat to South Africa
- Embarrassed by Defeat: WRU Chair Richard Collier-Keywood stated he was “embarrassed” and “very upset” by Wales’ 73-0 home defeat to South Africa.
- Record Loss: The 73-0 thrashing was a record home defeat for Wales and highlighted the gap between Welsh rugby and the world’s top teams.
- Confidence in Leadership: Despite the heavy criticism and the team’s lowly state, Collier-Keywood insisted he is still the right person to lead the future of Welsh rugby.
- Match Scheduling Issue: The Test match was played outside the international window, forcing Wales to be severely depleted without their English and French-based players.
- Defence of Decision: Collier-Keywood defended playing the match, noting it was a contractual obligation originating in 2018 that was subsequently rearranged.
- High Cost of Cancellation: He revealed that cancelling the game would have cost the WRU over £1 million in penalty fees to South Africa and foregone about £2 million in revenue (tickets and F&B).
- International Standing: Cancelling the match was not an option as it “would have sent shockwaves through the tier one rugby world.”
- Player Opportunity: The match was justified as an opportunity for the coaching staff, including Steve Tandy, to assess a “broad range of people” and strengthen depth.
- Financial & Investment Stability: He cited significant improvements under his tenure, including achieving sustainable finances and announcing a £40 million investment into Welsh rugby over five years.
- Organisational Professionalism: Collier-Keywood also pointed to professionalising the WRU’s governance, adopting a more professional approach to food and beverage (F&B) operations, and partnering with ZipWorld.
