The retailer has confirmed the closing dates for 27 branches including one in Wales

River Island has announced the closure dates for 27 of its branches including one in Wales. The popular fashion retailer had previously revealed plans to shut 33 shops following High Court approval of a significant restructuring scheme.

Among the closures is one outlet in Wrexham. The company has now released the shutdown dates for all 27 locations, with closures set to take place this month.

River Island has stated it continues to negotiate with the landlord at Parc Llandudno regarding this particular site. At the time of its rescue plan being heard in court last August, the clothing retailer operated 223 shops throughout the UK and Ireland. Last year, the company recorded a £32.3million pre-tax loss and disclosed that turnover had fallen 15% to £578.1million.

During the court proceedings, Matthew Weaver, representing River Island, explained that the firm “simply has not been able to reverse” its ongoing financial struggles.

He pointed to reduced footfall and declining sales, attributing these to “the pressures of a highly competitive and changing retail environment as well as the prevailing trend away from high street retail stores to online shopping”.

In a statement, Ben Lewis, chief executive of River Island, said: “River Island is a much-loved retailer with a decades-long history on the British high street.

“However, the well-documented migration of shoppers from the high street to online has left the business with a large portfolio of stores that is no longer aligned to our customers’ needs.

“The sharp rise in the cost of doing business over the last few years has only added to the financial burden. We have a clear strategy to transform the business to ensure its long-term viability.

“Recent improvements in our fashion offer and in-store shopping experience are already showing very positive results, but it is only with a restructuring plan that we will be able to see this strategy through and secure River Island’s future as a profitable retail business.”
