Road closures in and around Darlington this weekend
Here are the roadworks you should know about in and around the town between January 17 and 18.
Clifton Road and Yarm Road North Back Street
Clifton Road will be closed on January 18 for essential sewer surveys by Northumbrian Water.
The works, classified as major, involve a road closure of the carriageway at the junction with Cattle Market South Back and outside 38 Clifton Road, Darlington.
The project consists of a CCTV survey to the sewer, with no excavation required. Motorists should seek alternative routes while the closure is in effect.
Meanwhile, Northumbrian Water’s works on Yarm Road North Back Street are already in progress and continue until January 18.
An immediate and urgent repair is underway to address leakage issues at the rear of 23 Yarm Road, with excavation and repair of an existing communication pipe. This requires a full road closure of the carriageway, so drivers are advised to avoid the area until works conclude.
Continued Utility Works in Blackwell
Two closures are affecting Blackwell. Northern Gas Networks continues major utility replacement works between the junctions with Bridge Road and Carmel Road South—these started January 5 and are scheduled to last until April 15.
The works require closure of the footway, carriageway and verge, as sections of gas main are replaced. Connections, relays, and transfers will be carried out along the affected stretch.
A separate road closure in Blackwell, also starting January 5 and running until January 23, is taking place on the carriageway, and drivers should prepare for disruption.
Footpath Closures in Low Coniscliffe
Low Coniscliffe residents will see two long-running closures. Footpath 8 is closed from December 19, 2025 until June 20. Footpath 5 is also closed, from January 5 through July 5. Both are for other works.
Woodland Road, Cockerton Green, and Albert Road Disruption
Woodland Road is experiencing major works by Northern Gas Networks, using multi-way traffic signals. These works began January 12 and are expected to continue through to February 3, impacting both the footway and carriageway outside numbers 167 to 175.
On January 18, two minor works are also set to begin: Cockerton Green will see the use of two-way signals as Northumbrian Water replaces a damaged manhole cover and frame adjacent to 68 Cockerton Green.
At the same time, Northern Powergrid will excavate trial holes in the footway and carriageway on Albert Road bridge, again using two-way signals to manage traffic.
Tornado Way Lane Closure
National Highways has implemented an urgent lane closure on Tornado Way.
This is in place from January 12 to 17, allowing for road-related works. Motorists should expect delays in this area during the lane closure.
Multiple Works on North Road
North Road is subject to numerous works affecting different sections.
Northern Powergrid has planned standard works using multi-way signals from January 17 to February 1; excavation of around 15 metres in the carriageway is required to install new cables outside number 319 and the opposite side.
Simultaneously, Northumbrian Water will carry out minor roadworks at 471a North Road on January 18, using two-way signals to renew a valve chamber cover.
Northern Gas Networks’ major works—using ‘give and take’ traffic management—are ongoing at the junction with Holmwood Grove until January 30.
Additionally, the North Road East Back will remain closed for major gas replacement works until January 30.
Other Works
Major utility works continue on Oakland Gardens, Holmwood Grove, and Barmpton Lane, with various road closures in place.
Works are also ongoing in Harrowgate Village and Beaumont Hill as part of new development highway improvements, both with major road and footway closures expected to last into March.
