Road safety concerns prompt council review on Bridge of Allan street

Stirling Council have confirmed a review of road safety measures around Henderson Street will be carried out after community concerns over a series of accidents in recent months.

Stirling Council has been urged to investigate possible further road safety measures in Bridge of Allan after a spate of recent accidents on the town’s streets.

The call has come from the area’s MSP, Keith Brown, after issues with accidents on key hotspots in the town – including on the busy Henderson Street through the middle of Bridge of Allan.

According to Mr Brown, a recent accident there saw a car head off the road and miss a nearby woman and her young daughter by inches.

Mr Brown has written to Stirling Council chief executive Brian Roberts about the growing number of collisions in the Henderson Street region and sharing concerns on changes to road layout.

The MSP said: “I have been increasingly concerned by the number of road accidents taking place in Bridge of Allan.

“One recent collision on Henderson Street saw a car veer off the road and miss a constituent and her young daughter by seconds.

“Thankfully, they were unharmed – but very badly shaken.

“Another incident at the clock tower outside the Westerton Arms also came within moments of causing serious injury. These are not isolated events – there have been several accidents in the area, and it is a miracle that no one has been hurt so far.

“People should feel safe walking or driving through Henderson Street and the surrounding areas, but right now many residents simply do not.

“There may be different reasons behind each individual incident, but taken together they point clearly to the need for action.

“That is why I have urged Stirling Council to carry out a full review of the current road layout, signage, markings, speed limits and the potential use of cameras or other safety measures.”

The recent history of incidents in the area goes back to the well-publicised accident in December last year where a motorist crashed into the historic 126-year-old Paterson Memorial Clock.

Local councillor Alasdair Tollemache added: “There is real concern in Bridge of Allan over the recent number of accidents on Henderson Street .

“I have spoken to officers and I understand a review will take place.

“One particular concern is the speed of traffic and drivers not stopping at the crossings.”

A Stirling Council spokesperson said: “A review of road safety in Henderson Street, Bridge of Allan, will be carried out in line with our points-based traffic management prioritisation system.

“This assessment will determine if action is required and is based on factors that include the number of collisions on the road, traffic speeds, traffic flow, road width and gradient, and pedestrian activity.

“We will keep the local community updated on the progress and outcomes of this work.”
