An update has been provided by a Los Angeles medical examiner in the alleged double murder case involving Hollywood director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele, who were discovered deceased at their Los Angeles residence on Sunday.
Forensic pathologists from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office have released a report confirming that the couple’s deaths were due to “multiple sharp force injuries”, reports Birmingham Live..
This latest development comes as the couple’s 32 year old son, Nick Reiner, faces charges for both murders.
Nick Reiner made his first court appearance on Wednesday since his arrest in relation to his parents’ deaths, where he waived his right to enter a plea during his arraignment hearing.
During the hearing, Nick was observed shirtless, shackled, and seemingly wearing a suicide prevention vest.
Nick’s solicitor, Alan Jackson, addressed the media outside the court on Wednesday, highlighting the “complex and serious issues” involved in the case. He urged the public not to “rush to judgement”, stating that nothing substantial had transpired in the case thus far.
Reports suggest that Rob and Michele were “in bed” at the time of their deaths. It is believed that the body of renowned filmmaker Rob was discovered at their Brentwood mansion on Sunday by their daughter, Romy.
Allegedly, a paramedic later informed her of her mother Michele’s death as well.
The couple were reportedly found with their throats slit, a source informed the Daily Mail. The perpetrator is believed to have committed the act “in the middle of the night” while they were in bed, according to the source who added: “They were in bed when that happened.”
LAPD sources relayed to TMZ that “rigor mortis appeared to have set in Rob and Michele’s bodies,” suggesting that the couple had been deceased for several hours before being discovered.
Their children, Romy and Jake, have since broken their silence on the tragic loss of their parents.
In a joint statement, they expressed: “Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day.
“The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience. They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends.
“We are grateful for the outpouring of condolences, kindness, and support we have received not only from family and friends but people from all walks of life. We now ask for respect and privacy, for speculation to be tempered with compassion and humanity, and for our parents to be remembered for the incredible lives they lived and the love they gave.”
This followed an earlier family statement regarding the deaths. A spokesperson for the family announced at the time: “It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner.
“We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time.”
