Hollywood film director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele were found dead at their Brentwood home in Los Angeles
Rob Reiner, the renowned director-actor, and his wife Michele were found dead on Sunday at their Los Angeles home, according to a law enforcement official.
The official, who requested anonymity due to the ongoing investigation, was unable to publicly share further details, the Associated Press reports. Preliminary investigations suggest that the couple suffered stab wounds, with a family member currently being questioned by investigators, the official disclosed.
The Los Angeles Fire Department reported responding to a medical aid call shortly after 3.30 pm. There, they found a 78 year old man and a 68 year old woman dead inside the property. Reiner had celebrated his 78th birthday in March.
Capt. Mike Bland of the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed that detectives from the Robbery Homicide Division are investigating what appears to be a homicide at Reiner’s residence. Authorities in Los Angeles have yet to officially confirm the identities of the deceased found at the property located in Brentwood, an affluent neighbourhood on the city’s west side known for its celebrity residents.
Reiner was one of Hollywood’s most prolific directors, responsible for some of the most iconic films of the 1980s and ’90s, including This is Spinal Tap, A Few Good Men, When Harry Met Sally and The Princess Bride. His portrayal of Meathead in Norman Lear’s 1970s television classic “All in the Family,” alongside Carol O’Connor’s Archie Bunker, propelled him to stardom and earned him two Emmy Awards.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass described Reiner’s passing as a devastating blow to the city.
“Rob Reiner’s contributions reverberate throughout American culture and society, and he has improved countless lives through his creative work and advocacy fighting for social and economic justice,” Bass said in a statement. “An acclaimed actor, director, producer, writer, and engaged political activist, he always used his gifts in service of others.”
The son of comedy icon Carl Reiner, Rob Reiner had been wed to photographer Michele Singer Reiner since 1989. The couple first crossed paths whilst he was filming “When Harry Met Sally” and share three children.
Previously, Reiner was married to actor-director Penny Marshall between 1971 and 1981, adopting her daughter Tracy Reiner during that time. Carl Reiner died in 2020 aged 98, whilst Marshall passed away in 2018.
