Santander, NatWest, Lloyds to shut 81 bank branches starting in DAYS

BRITS are facing more banking misery as high streets are set to see more closures.

Up and down the country from this month and into 2026, 81 branches are set to shut for good.

Just for the remaining days in December 2025, 10 branches are poised to shut within days.

These include six Natwest branches and four from Santander.

The grim picture is set to continue into 2026 with the worst affected being the Lloyds Banking Group – which includes Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland – with 71 branches set to close in 2026.

The closures come as customers continue to reduce the need to do their banking in person, opting instead to do it online.

Lloyds Banking Group spokesperson said: “The way people are banking has changed, with over 21 million customers choosing apps to manage their money.

“We’re providing more choice than ever before, bringing together the best in digital convenience with our people.

“Alongside our app, our customers can use any Lloyds, Halifax or Bank of Scotland branch, the Post Office or banking hubs for their everyday banking, and deposit cash at over 30,000 PayPoint locations.”

The group are rolling out “Community Bankers” to support those who will be left without a local branch.

They will be based in a community venue or banking hub ready to offer in-person support.

You can find your nearest Community Banker on both the Lloyds Bank and Halifax websites.

It appears most of the branches will shut up shop in the first three months of next year.

This could be an indication there will be even more branches closed as 2026 continues.

What to do if your local bank is set to close

There are still a number of ways people can access basic banking services without having to venture to another town with a branch.

You can use one of the Post Office’s 11,684 branches to perform basic banking tasks — but not to open new bank accounts or take personal loans and mortgages.

You can find your nearest Post Office branch by visiting postoffice.co.uk/branch-finder.

Many banks also offer a mobile banking service – where they bring a bus to your area offering services you can usually get at a physical branch.

Other banks use buildings such as village halls or libraries to offer mobile banking services.

It’s worth contacting your bank to see what mobile services they have available, and when they might next be in your area.

New super ATMs are being rolled out across the UK where branch closures have left residents unable to access essential banking services.

These ATMs will allow customers to withdraw funds, access their balance, change PIN numbers and deposit cash.
