Manchester City’s hectic January continues as they travel to Newcastle United for the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night
Manchester City may have injury concerns but they pushed that to one side on Saturday as they thrashed Exeter City 10-1 in the FA Cup third round. While Pep Guardiola insists the margin of victory will not be one of his highlights by the time his era ends, he will be pleased by the strength in depth his squad showed.
When asked about injuries on Monday, Guardiola confirmed there was a few niggles in the squad which beat the League One club. Rayan Ait-Nouri is back from the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) but after the full-back saw his flight home to Manchester cancelled, he may not be involved in the Carabao Cup semi-final.
Meanwhile, Omar Marmoush remains at AFCON after Egypt beat Ivory Coast on Saturday. With this in mind, MEN Sport has taken a closer look at the injured players who could be out of this midweek clash.
Savinho
Injury: Knee
The Brazilian has been missing since coming off on New Year’s Day at Sunderland. Guardiola has been pessimistic about Savinho’s return date saying it will be at least six weeks due to the injury to his quadricep.
Potential return date: February 2026
John Stones
Injury: Thigh
City had been hoping Stones would not be out for long but this has since drained away. Guardiola confirmed last week he is not available for the coming matches.
Potential return date: January 2026
Ruben Dias
Injury: Hamstring
The centre-back has been out since the Chelsea draw and remains unavailable for this semi-final. If the worst case scenario was to unfold, Dias could be out of action for six weeks.
Potential return date: February 2026
Josko Gvardiol
Injury: Leg
Gvardiol had surgery on his broken shinbone. The defender will be in a race against the clock to play again this season though.
Potential return date: April/May 2026
Oscar Bobb
Injury: Hamstring
Bobb felt his hamstring against Brentford and Guardiola confirmed last week the winger had not trained since that victory in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals. Should he return before the end of January, there could be a chance he leaves on loan.
Potential return date: January 2026
Mateo Kovacic
Injury: Ankle
The midfielder has been the absent the longest but his return could be soon. Guardiola explained the former Chelsea man could be called upon again in the latter stages of the season.
Potential return date: February 2026
