While the stormy conditions are expected to ease down throughout the night, the national forecaster has issued a yellow warning for ice from midnight on Wednesday, January 28 to 10am on Wednesday morning. This warning spans from Clackmannanshire and Perth down to the Scottish Borders and into England, hitting London and parts of Wales.

The Met Office states that skies are set to clear on Tuesday night, which will allow temperatures to fall below freezing soon after midnight. Due to the recent rain and snow, it is likely that dangerous icy patches will appear on untreated surfaces.

The latest warning states: “Clearing skies Tuesday night will allow temperatures to fall below freezing soon after midnight and on Wednesday morning. After the recent wet weather, icy patches are likely to develop on some untreated surfaces.”

As a result, this could cause accidents, slips and falls on pavements and roads if Scots are cautious while outside. The Met Office is advising those who need to venture outside to plan to leave their homes five minutes earlier than normal and to not rush.

This follows a series of yellow warnings for rain, snow and wind being placed across Scotland for January 27, with patches of England and Wales also being hit with stormy conditions. However, Northern Ireland is being seen to take the brunt of the strong gusts as it has been issued with an amber weather warning.

Beginning in the early hours of the morning, these yellow warnings are in place until 23:59pm tonight for South Ayrshire, Dumfries and Galloway, and Argyll and Bute. Expected to be hit with gusts of wind up between 50 to 60mph, Scots in these areas are being warned that power cuts may occur.

Meanwhile, the Highlands, Stirling, Perth, and Grampian are under a rain and snow warning until midnight on January 27. The rain is predicted to be persistent and heavy at times, with snow also expected to fall on high ground. While some places may see 35mm of rainfall, others could be battered with 50mm.

The south west of Scotland, Strathclyde and the Lothian Borders also have a yellow warning in place today, but this is set to end at 5pm on Tuesday evening. Scots in these regions are being warned that the wintry weather can make driving conditions dangerous, with road closures and delays to be expected.

Anyone travelling during these conditions are advised to bring essentials with them in case of accidents and delays occurring throughout the day. This includes warm clothing, food, water, a blanket, de-icer and an in-car phone charger.

As Storm Chandra batters the country, Met Office chief forecaster Paul Gunderson said: “Storm Chandra will bring a range of hazards to the UK through Monday night and Tuesday.

“Initially strong winds will impact the Isles of Scilly, western Cornwall and southwest Wales which are still vulnerable after Storm Goretti, gusts of 70 to 80mph are possible here. Heavy rain is an additional hazard as it falls on saturated ground in Dorset and southern parts of Devon, Somerset and Cornwall.

“As Chandra interacts with colder air further north snow becomes a hazard, with 10-20cm of snow possibly accumulating over higher ground in the Pennines, southern Scotland and the Highlands. With a complex spell of weather, it’s important people stay up to date with the forecast and any warnings in your area.”
