Second MP Quits Jeremy Corbyn’s Your Party
Another independent MP has just quit Jeremy Corbyn’s Your Party as the chaos within the fledging group deepens.
Iqbal Mohamed announced on Friday that he was quitting the new party, and would return to “serving as I was elected as an independent member of parliament for Dewsbury & Batley.”
Mohamed cited the “many false allegations and smears made against me and others”, which he claimed have been “reported as fact without evidence”.
“I am confident that my colleagues and I have acted professionally, patiently and in good faith throughout,” he added.
He insisted that he still hoped Your Party would continue to be a “genuine, inclusive force for positive change”, and said he would continue working with his colleagues in the Independent Alliance.
It comes after he was criticised by the party’s co-founder, former Labour MP Zarah Sultana, earlier this week over gender-critical social media posts.
He claimed women’s rights must not be “taken away” while Sultana said being pro-trans must be a “non-negotiable” part of the new group.
In a post on X last Sunday before announcing his decision to quit, Mohamed said: “Don’t blame Corbyn for the faults of the Left and its ability to look for differences to fight over. And make sure that he is not replaced by a selfish, egotistical power hungry, dishonest, me-myself-I person.”
Mohamed’s resignation comes days before Your Party holds its first ever conference in Liverpool, November 29-30.
He is also the second independent MP to quit – Adnan Hussain, the MP for Blackburn, resigned on November 14.
It leaves the fledging group with four MPs: Corbyn, Sultana, Shockat Adam and Ayoub Khan, all of whom campaigned on a pro- Palestine platform in 2024.
Political infighting has dominated the new party ever since it was announced in August, despite the substantial amount of public interest and initial support in the left-wing group.
Sultana also called it a “sexist boys club” in September after independently opening an online portal for the public to become paid-up members of the group – which has since been taken down.
Mohamed claims in his departure statement on Friday that Sultana “voluntarily left the Independent Alliance and Your Party stewarding group” in September.
Sultana and Corbyn now appear to be locked in a leadership battle, both trying to win over their party to become the dominant figurehead – even running separate pre-conference rallies.
