The incident on Hanover Street took place a little over 24 hours after a Glasgow city centre branch of the bank was also targeted and daubed in red paint.
A second HSBC branch in Scotland has been targeted by vandals. Police were called to the Edinburgh branch on the city’s Hanover Street at around 4.30am on Saturday.
The incident took place a little over 24 hours after a Glasgow city centre branch of the bank was also targeted and daubed in red paint. Images of the aftermath of the attack show the branch in darkness with what appears to be grey paint thrown over the windows and brickwork.
Edinburgh Live reports workmen were tending to the damage in the hours after it was reported. Police were alerted to the incident in the early hours of Saturday, December 13 and the branch has now been closed while enquiries are carried out.
In a statement, police did not say if the vandalism in Edinburgh was linked to the Glasgow incident. No activist groups have come forward to claim responsibility for either vandalism incident so far.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 4.30am on Saturday, 13 December, 2025, we received a report of vandalism to a premises in Hanover Street, Edinburgh. Enquiries are ongoing.”
A HSBC UK spokesperson apologised for any inconvenience this may have caused their customers, adding: “We are aware of an incident at our branch on Hanover Street and it is currently closed while the Police investigate the matter. Our aim is to get back open and running as quickly as possible.
“We apologise to any customers who may have wished to visit the branch today.”
