Shields Ferry suspended after Storm Chandra damage
Services were halted after structural damage was identified at the north landing, which occurred during Storm Chandra on Tuesday 27 January.
Nexus said the closure is a precautionary measure, while urgent structural repair works take place.
John Souter, head of customer service operations at Nexus, said: “This closure is a precautionary measure in the interest of public safety.
“A detailed inspection of the landing has determined that it requires urgent repairs.
“It’s not possible to have the landing in use until these works have been completed.
“The repairs need to be undertaken by specialist maritime engineers and we are working with them to get this arranged as soon as possible.
“We’re sorry for the inconvenience caused to our customers.”
Nexus has confirmed that the ferry will remain suspended until these works are complete.
In the meantime, a replacement bus service is running between the ferry landings, and Shields Ferry tickets are being accepted on Metro services.
Passengers are advised to check the Nexus website or the Shields Ferry Facebook page for the latest updates on service resumption.
The public can contact the Nexus media office for more information or visit the Nexus website.
