Mohamed Salah’s position at Liverpool is uncertain after his explosive outburst to journalists in the mixed zone and it remains to be seen if Arne Slot will bring him back into the fold
It’s the question that is on everyone’s lips but, also, one that seemed unthinkable just a few short months ago: has Mohamed Salah played his last game for Liverpool?
The Egypt international was duly rewarded for one of the most productive campaigns of his career with a new contract earlier this year and celebrated by lifting the Premier League trophy with the Reds back in May. But on the eve of 2026, Salah himself has alluded to the fact that his love story with Liverpool could be in it’s final throes after losing his place in Arne Slot’s side.
With Liverpool in dire form – and Salah not really hitting the heights of last season – Slot made the decision to drop the 33-year-old for 2-0 win away at West Ham.
He didn’t return for the 1-1 draw at Sunderland, though he was introduced at half-time as Liverpool sought a winner. But it was the 3-3 draw with Leeds, Salah’s third straight game on the bench, that saw the player unleash the biggest of mixed zone bombshells.
Salah claimed that he had been ‘thrown under the bus’ by the club before revealing that his relationship with Slot had broken down, opening the door to a sensational mid-season transfer.
Unsurprisingly, Salah’s bombshell was not well received and he was subsequently omitted from the travelling part for the midweek win at Inter Milan in the Champions League, though it was stressed that was a logical move rather than a punishment.
Slot has since admitted he doesn’t know if Salah has played his final game for the club amid claims that clubs from the Saudi Pro League are willing to do ‘whatever it takes’ to bring the Liverpool man to the Middle East.
Salah heavily implied that this weekend’s game against Brighton could be his last for Liverpool; the club, however, have no plans to grant him a grand farewell and various reports stress they want to retain Salah’s services.
But is there any way back for Salah after he effectively laid siege on Slot with his outburst? Should Liverpool cut ties with him now? Or should one of their greatest ever players be given the chance to make amends and win his place back.
