Signs erected as work continues at Darlington Station
Works have been ongoing at the new eastern concourse for months as part of a major development to make the station a “gateway to the whole of the Tees Valley”.
The work, which was originally due to finish last December but got pushed back due to construction delays and costs, is on target to be completed this spring.
New pictures have offered a glimpse at the station’s progress, with signs now up on the new concourse as it gears up to welcome commuters later this year.

The aim of the £140m project – which is one of the biggest transport projects in the town’s history – was to transform the site into a modern transport hub.
The work is intended to improve reliability and capacity on the East Coast Main Line, while also providing better facilities for passengers.

Once complete, the station will boast a new entrance featuring shops and waiting areas, a modernised western entrance, and an elevated walkway connecting it to the historic station.
Two new platforms have been added, with a new signalling system completed last month, and a multi-storey car park for more than 650 cars has been built.

The extension to the station has been designed to “mould the historic grandeur of the Grade-ll listed station” with modern facilities.
The exact shops and units taking up space in the concourse are yet to be confirmed.

The Tees Valley Combined Authority has contributed £43million to the overhaul while Network Rail and the Department for Transport put in £96million.
A Network Rail spokesperson said last month: “The project remains on target for opening in spring 2026, with work on site continuing to progress well.
“In early December, the new signalling system which will allow trains to stop at the new platforms was successfully installed.
“The structural works for the new platforms, concourse, car park and bridge are also complete, and fit-out work – including the installation of lighting, CCTV, fire alarm systems and other equipment – is ongoing.”
