Sunderland city centre transformed with festive window trail
“Once Upon A Winter Trail” brings the story of Sleeping Beauty to life through painted storefronts and a city-wide walking route ahead of the pantomime opening at the Sunderland Empire on December 12.
The trail has been organised by Sunderland’s City Centre and Seafront BIDs and features painted windows by artist Danielle Stephenson of Del’s Doodles.
The artwork appears in 10 locations, beginning at the Beacon of Light and ending at the Empire.
Roberta Redecke, Head of Business Services at Sunderland’s BIDs, said: “With Sleeping Beauty just about to open it’s the perfect time to remind everyone about the trail and what a great experience it offers in the run-up to Christmas.”
Painted windows can also be found on High Street West, West Sunniside, Holmeside, and Blandford Street, including sites such as Harrison & Brown, the Hilton Garden Inn, Flowers By Jennifer, and The Glass Onion.
A printed and digital map is available to guide visitors along the route.

The map can be picked up at participating businesses or downloaded from www.spenditinsunderland.co.uk, which also lists other Christmas activities in the city.
This year’s pantomime at the Sunderland Empire runs until January 4 and stars Laura Main from Call The Midwife, Milkshake! presenter David Ribi, and West End performer Jordan Lee Davies.
The trail invites families, shoppers, and theatre-goers to enjoy a festive storytelling journey and explore the city centre in the lead-up to Christmas.
