Everything you need to know about the Switzerland ski resort fire that has left ‘dozens dead’ in Crans-Montana
- A major fire at a bar and lounge in the premier ski resort of Crans-Montana has left “several dozen” people dead, according to Swiss authorities.
- Police Commander Frederic Gisler has confirmed that several dozen people have died following a major fire at Le Constellation Bar and Lounge. While spokesperson Gaëtan Lathion stated that 10 deaths are currently confirmed, officials warned that the final figure remains uncertain as emergency crews continue to work on-site.
- The blaze broke out at approximately 1.30am on New Year’s Day following New Year’s Eve celebrations. At the time, hundreds of people were inside the venue, which has a capacity of 400, and many of the guests are believed to be international tourists visiting the popular resort in the Valais region.
- A large-scale emergency response is in effect, involving 140 first responders, 40 ambulances, and 10 helicopters. Local hospitals in French-speaking Switzerland are reportedly overwhelmed by the number of burns victims, prompting authorities to set up a reception centre and a dedicated helpline for families.
- Investigators are looking into preliminary reports that an explosion, possibly linked to indoor fireworks, may have triggered the fire, though police say there is no evidence the incident was intentional or terror-related. The tragedy occurred at the height of the holiday season, shortly before the resort is due to host the FIS World Cup speed skiing event.
