Locals have described the situation as ‘really worrying’ while the store will be closed until further notice

A potential gas leak on a Welsh high street has seen one store close and evacuated on Sunday evening. Residents in Bethesda, Gwynedd, reported smelling gas that they believe is coming from one of the buildings along High Street.

The Tesco Express store was temporarily closed before 5pm on Sunday, January 4 and store workers were seen evacuating whilst Wales and West Utilities were at the scene. A Tesco spokesperson said: “We hope to reopen our Bethesda High Steet Express as soon as possible. We apologise for the inconvenience.”

Local resident Grace Scott told North Wales Live that as she walked along the street near the Tesco Express with her children and husband John on Sunday afternoon the family smelt the “gas” and they immediately reported it.

She said: “It smells all down the high street and as we reported it, they said they’d be there within the next hour. As we walked home we walked past Tesco and all the Tesco workers have had to come out of the shop, they’re standing outside in the cold because it smells really bad in Tesco as well.”

She added: “It’s really worrying considering that there are a lot of people still in those houses and flats and they can smell that gas really bad [sic].” Numerous other residents along the High Street have reported smelling “gas” in the area.

The A5 High Street has also been closed both directions since around 9am on Sunday morning due to accident investigation work from the Braichmelyn (Bethesda) to the Pant Road (Braichmelyn). The road remains closed at the time of reporting.
