The 9 best sewing machines for beginner and intermediate sewers, tested by a Sewing Bee winner

We’re living through a golden age of making. Crafts are booming as people turn to creative, mindful hobbies for stress relief, skill building and extra income. Creating things is popular again, and sewing sits at the centre of the movement.

I’m Annie Phillips and I sew for a living, designing, teaching and helping new stitchers learn the craft. I’ve worked with everything from budget-friendly beginner machines to industry-led workhorses, and I know exactly what makes a machine frustration-proof, fun to use and great for those just starting out.

In this guide, I have shortlisted nine sewing machines which suit all types of sewers, from novice to skilled. I’ve including trusted brands like Brother and Janome, as well as more industrial favourites such as Juki. Prices range from £90 to over £1,500. They are separated by their features, from automatic needle threaders and speed controls to specialised embroidery stitches and computerised systems. I explain all of this and share my expert reviews below, followed by answers to the questions beginners ask most. First, here are five of my favourite sewing machines for every ability.

How to choose the best sewing machine

Unfortunately, there is no one sewing machine for everyone. Choosing the right machine begins with understanding your intended use. Heavy-duty projects such as quilting, denim or upholstery require a more robust motor and durable build, while occasional garment repairs can be handled by a simpler, lightweight model.

Frequency of use also matters: regular sewing benefits from higher-quality components that offer longevity and consistent performance.

Your required features should align with your practice. If you don’t plan to embroider, extra decorative stitches may be unnecessary, while specific functions such as an automatic needle threader, adjustable sewing speed or the ability to drop the feed dogs for free-motion work can significantly improve efficiency for more experienced makers. If any of these terms are new to you, you can find a sewing terms glossary below.

Skill level plays a crucial role. Beginners often benefit from straightforward controls, intuitive interfaces and clear instructions to build confidence. In contrast, advanced sewists may prefer machines that offer greater precision, flexibility and room to grow creatively.

Considering these factors ensures you choose a machine that supports your sewing goals without overwhelming you with features you won’t use, or limiting you when your skills progress.
