How to choose the best filter coffee machine
Drip coffee makers are popular for making a longer, less intense drink than expensive and complicated bean-to-cup coffee machines. Start, says Sobey, by thinking about how quickly you want that morning cup.
Basic filter machines offer one-button brewing for speed, but little control over flavour or aroma. More discerning coffee drinkers might prefer a drip machine with a range of programmes to adjust brew temperature and strength, or set automatic switch-on and shut-off times.
Consider whether you prefer a hot plate or an insulated jug to keep drinks warm. A glass jug with a hot plate often looks neater, but some people find the coffee continues to cook, creating a burnt taste. A thermal jugs avoid this problem.
For Sobey, the key factors are budget and coffee knowledge. “If you don’t consider yourself a serious hobbyist, then you don’t need to spend that much,” he says. “What’s more important is the quality of coffee beans you use and how freshly they have been ground.”
