On winter evenings, visitors describe roaring fires and a “warm, welcoming feel”, while in the warmer months, it is a popular base for those tackling walking routes through Swaledale and Arkengarthdale, including Wainwright’s Coast to Coast path, which passes through the village.

Food is a major draw. Recent reviews have praised the pub’s move from carvery to plated Sunday roasts during the winter, with one diner describing the meal as “top notch” and singling out generous portions, multiple meat options and “lashings of gravy”.

Others have highlighted classic pub dishes such as steak and ale pie, lamb and fish and chips, often enjoyed after a day outdoors.

Beyond food, the Black Bull’s appeal lies in its atmosphere. Reviews regularly mention the sense of “comfort and familiarity”, with visitors describing it as “home from home” and a place where it is easy to settle in for the evening.

The pub also plays a key role in Reeth’s wider visitor appeal. As the village continues to attract attention for its peaceful setting, village green and walking routes, the Black Bull remains one of the places visitors most often associate with that experience.

“It’s exactly what you want in a Dales pub,” one visitor wrote.

“Good food, friendly staff and a fire waiting when you get back from a long walk.”
