No other area in Cambs has asylum seekers living in its hotels
There is often a lot of misconception and misinformation regarding the use of different hotels and blocks of flats to house asylum seekers. This is also true in Cambridgeshire; however, it has been confirmed that only one area of the county has asylum seekers living there.
Figures published by the Home Office show that Peterborough is the only place in the county where asylum seekers are currently living. As of June 30, 2025, 202 individuals were housed in hotels, and this number increased to 216 by the end of September 2025.
One such hotel being used is the Dragonfly. The Dragonfly Hotel in Peterborough has been used to house asylum seekers since November 2024, when 146 men were relocated there.
The local council has maintained that The Dragonfly Hotel is not suitable for housing asylum seekers. Ever since, a few protests have been held outside the hotel in opposition to the decision.
In visit to the city in April of this year, Reform UK Leader Nigel Farage slammed the Home Office’s decision as “outrageous”. He said: “Local residents are enraged by things like this, particularly when the waits for social housing are as long as they are and particularly that young men who cross the channel and destroy their identity documents get free healthcare.”
