The Press Business Awards: Retail, Leisure and Hospitality

Kemps Bookshop & General Store, in Malton, has been honoured for its innovation, community engagement, and outstanding customer experience.

The accolade was presented at a ceremony with more than 300 guests at York Racecourse.

Founded in 2017 as a gift shop, Kemps expanded into much larger premises in 2020 despite the uncertainties of the pandemic, and launched a full bookshop, becoming a vibrant destination for readers and gift-seekers alike.

Liz Kemp told guests that she and her partner Jonathan Wurr were always looking at how to innovate.

She added: “I am really glad to be flying the flag for high streets. We are really thrilled to represent our high streets that need all the support that we can give them.

“I’m both surprised and thrilled with this award. It’s a great tribute to our teams in both Wetherby and Malton and to our wonderful customers. Now, more than ever, it is so important to keep our high streets vibrant and flourishing by shopping local. Jonathan and I send our heartfelt thanks to everyone who supports us.”

Kemps also champions community through school partnerships, reading groups and initiatives like the Book Bank for the Food Bank which makes books accessible to families in need.
