BBC hit show, The Traitors, returned on Thursday night, and there was a huge twist in the series that viewers did not see coming
The Traitors made its comeback on Thursday night with a thrilling instalment packed with surprises. Alongside the freshly introduced Secret Traitor twist, fans witnessed not one but two family connections amongst the contestants, which are bound to shake up the competition in various ways.
The most surprising revelation occurred midway through the show when Roxy revealed that Judy is her mother, following the brilliant moment from series two when Diane dropped the bombshell about Ross being her son.
On this occasion, Roxy was speaking directly to the camera, explaining her protective instincts towards her fellow player. However, sharp-eyed fans have noticed that she accidentally revealed the secret much earlier during the show’s first challenge.
The contestants were challenged to navigate a vast loch in search of 12 treasure-filled coffins among a hundred decoys, and in a moment of high tension, Roxy called out directions to her mother, who had taken her in at age four.

“Stop, mum,” she called out. “Stop, stop, stop, guys!” Viewers were shocked that the other players appeared to miss this telling slip of the tongue.
“Roxy called out ‘Mum’ in the boat. How did they not hear her?” questioned one fan. Another commented: “How on Earth did no one else clock Roxy shouting ‘Mum’ on the boat?”
Fans thought that ‘surely one of them in the boat’ must have heard what she said, while other viewers were loving the potential chaos.
One viewer commented: “This is gonna be so much fun.” Another confused fan said, “I thought it was a secret, but Roxy called Judy ‘Mum’ in the challenge?!”
Others felt vindicated after picking up on the awkward moment, as one added wrote: ‘” Because she’s my mum,” I KNEW IT, Roxy accidentally called Judy mum during the challenge #TheTraitors”
Some fans are already eagerly anticipating someone mentioning the awkward incident at the roundtable, even though no one acknowledged it at the time.
Mike Cotton, the creative director of production company Studio Lambert, confessed that the potential for such twists is what makes the regular show so unpredictable compared to the celebrity series.
“One of the great things about the regular series is the contestants can come in with secrets, whether that’s about their lives or secret relationships,” he told the BBC.
“We never know when we’re going to deploy it. When we’re going into filming, we go in and wait to see how it plays out.”
In another twist, viewers saw two contestants recognise each other as they got out of the cars at the beginning, as it turns out Ross and Netty know each other through a mutual friend, although they haven’t seen each other in years.
Mike has confirmed producers ‘cast them as individuals’, not knowing there was a deeper connection.
“We do really lengthy background checks on who takes part, and as part of that, we discovered that they (Netty and Ross) follow each other on social media,’ he explained.
“So we knew there was a tenuous link, but we didn’t know whether they would recognise each other, or how they would react.”
The Traitors continues tonight at 8pm on BBC One.
