Three prison guards 'stabbed by inmate with shiv' in horror UK jail attack

Two guards were reportedly rushed to hospital after being attacked in the jail by a prisoner.

In a shocking incident at HMP Isle of Wight, three prison guards have reportedly been injured after being stabbed by an inmate armed with a makeshift weapon.

The alleged attack took place on Thursday (November 20), prompting police to initiate an investigation.

As reported by The Island Echo, two guards were swiftly transported to the nearby St Mary’s Hospital following the assault in the jail’s Inpatient Unit on the Albany site. A 32 year old man suffered facial injuries, while a 28 year old man sustained injuries to his right arm.

It is believed that a third staff member also received minor injuries during the alleged attack at the facility on Parkhurst Road, Newport.

The prisoner, who reportedly used a makeshift weapon, has since been relocated to a Segregation unit.

While no arrests have been made as yet, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Police are continuing their investigation. It is understood that the two officers have now been discharged from hospital, reports the Express.

The Ministry of Justice has condemned the attacks as “cowardly and unacceptable”.

A spokesperson stated: “Attacks on our staff are cowardly and unacceptable which is why we push for the strongest possible punishments”.
