Tiger Inn at Coneythorpe to launch cinema offering
The Tiger Inn at Coneythorpe, between Knaresborough and the A1 motorway, plans to start showing films in a new function room by the spring.
Work is to start next week, when the pub closes on January 4th for a ten-day break, which will see the function room, created from kitchen space.
The function room will enable the 19th Century pub to host small family gatherings, village meetings, and a variety of events. It will also host a cinema club, offering children’s films during the afternoons and screening classic blockbuster movies in the evenings.

Owner Mark Oglesby, who owns the nearby Goldsborough, bought the Tiger Inn in October 2024 and re-opened it after a major revamp last January.
Mark told the Press: “We will install a 100-inch screen with surroundsound. When the toom is not used for functions, we can put on kids movies after school and blockbuster classics in the evening.”
“It’s something a bit different. A couple with teenage kids can enjoy a meal while their children watch a movie or they can watch it together. We won’t charge for tickets. It will be free to watch.”

Mark continued: “We are a village pub in the middle of nowhere. If you want to go to the cinema, it’s a long way to go. It creates more of a community.”
Another innovation at the pub is replacing half the fryers to cooking with tallow (rendered beef or mutton fat).
Mark said: “Back in the day, everything was cooked in tallow. Now it’s coming out in the press that seed oils are not good for us but we have kept some for the vegans and vegetarians.”
Mark’s wife Clare Oglesby added: “This change has greatly enhanced the flavour of our food and has been met with enthusiastic approval.”

The innovation comes as the Tiger reports a successful December, with Clare giving much credit to their new head chef Sam (as in Samantha) Small, who joined a few months ago.
Clare said: “Sam is dedicated to producing high-quality food, often sourcing ingredients from Goldsborough Hall’s kitchen gardens. Her commitment to excellence has been evident in the dishes served, and customers have responded very positively.”
“When the pub reopens on 14th January, guests can look forward to Sam’s new menu. The new offerings will continue to feature the classic dishes that have made the Tiger renowned (seafood pancakes, jam roly poly etc), complemented by some exciting new additions.”.
Clare added: “We would like to encourage everyone to continue supporting their local pub, especially during these challenging times.
“The Tiger is grateful for the ongoing loyalty shown by our patrons, which plays a vital role in sustaining our community.
“For those seeking a reason to visit, we offer Clarkson’s Hawkstone beer and cider on draft. These drinks have quickly become favourites among our customers, and we believe they are well worth sampling.”
