Top 13 sofas in the UK for 2025, as reviewed by our experts
How to choose the best sofa
There are so many styles, shapes, and colours out there that it can be hard to find the sofa that suits you. I asked Portia Fox, interior designer and founder of an eponymous London studio, for her top tips.
Size and shape
“In spaces designed for relaxation, like a living room or a snug, a deep, generously-sized sofa, such as an L- or U-shaped sectional, offers the best comfort for lounging,” says Fox. “The proportions of the sofa suit the room, with enough space to move around without crowding the rest of the furniture.” If you’re shopping in-store, measure the sofa in situ to make sure it will fit through the door into the room of your choice.
Filling
“High-quality foam wrapped in feather or down combines structure and softness,” says Fox, “while entirely feather-filled cushions look and feel plush but require regular plumping to keep in good condition.”
Fabric
“For high-traffic spaces or homes with children and pets, durable, tightly woven or performance fabrics are ideal,” Fox advises. “Washable covers and stain-resistant finishes offer an extra layer of practicality. In more decorative or adult-only spaces, you can afford to be more indulgent with fabrics.”
