Train operator Northern issues New Year travel advice

Most services will run to the normal weekday timetable on New Year’s Eve, with final departures scheduled for around 9pm.

However, rail replacement buses will operate between Leeds and York/Selby due to improvement works on the line.

The operator is encouraging passengers to check routes before travelling due to engineering works taking place across the network throughout January.

Matt Rice, chief operating officer at Northern, said: “Whilst fewer people are travelling, Network Rail will be carrying out a range of improvement works across the network, so I’d encourage customers to ‘check before you travel’ to see if your journey is affected.”

On New Year’s Day, services will begin later in the morning and operate to the standard Thursday timetable, except in the North East, where no other trains will run that day.

A special limited-stop service to Whitby will return on New Year’s Day, following its successful introduction last year.

Northern will run two fast trains in both directions between Darlington, Middlesbrough, and Whitby.

No other trains will operate in the North East on January 1.

Upgrade works affecting the wider Northern network will continue throughout the month.

Trains will be diverted or replaced by buses on certain routes, including the Leeds to York line via Micklefield, as part of the Transpennine Route Upgrade.

Northern operates 2,650 services each day and serves more than 500 stations across the North of England.
