He died peacefully at home on December 13
Tributes have been paid to Peterborough city councillor Nick Thulbourn who has died following an illness. Cllr Thulbourn served as a ward councillor for Fletton and Woodston from 2012 to 2016 and then was re-elected in 2023.
He also served as cabinet member for growth and regeneration between April and September 2025. Cllr Thulbourn died peacefully at Thorpe Hall on Saturday, December 13.
Cllr Shabina Qayyum, Labour leader of Peterborough City Council, said: “Our city is a sadder place due to the news of the loss of one of our most respected councillors.
“Nick was the type of person who got along with everyone. And nothing ever phased him. No job or task was too big and he always had a solution to, in his words, ‘get the job done’.
“I will miss him very much. Our group will not be the same and we will miss his counsel on matters. We send his wife Margaret and their children and grandchildren our deepest of condolences at this very sad time.”
Peterborough MP Andrew Pakes also paid tribute to his good friend and Labour colleague.
He said: “Our city shines a little less brightly today after the deeply sad passing of Nick Thulbourn. Nick was a one-off. A friend, grafter and passionate about his politics and making Peterborough a better place to live and work.
“He was always there to help whether in his business, as a campaigner or councillor. His stock phrase – jobs a goodun – summed up his calm and clear view on the world and what needs to be done.
“From the first time I met him to our last conversation I relied on and respected his take on things.”
He added: “I share the sense of loss of my Labour councillor friends and party supporters. I send Margaret and their children my deepest condolences. A good champion of Peterborough and Labour values.”
Cllr Mohammed Jamil, cabinet member for finance, said: “I am absolutely gutted at the news of my friend’s passing. We have shared so many happy moments over the last 15 years.
“I will miss his practical solutions to all the challenges and his brilliant sense of humour. We always had our differences about my love for Liverpool FC and his love for Everton. Nick was an absolute diamond and he will be sorely missed. Till we meet again my friend.”
Liberal Democrat group leader, Cllr Christian Hogg, said: “Sorry to hear of his loss, we had some interesting debates on the Peterborough Limited board I will miss his candour.
“He was a man of principle and a cornerstone of the Labour group on PCC his loss will be felt for some time. My condolences to his family and friends.”
Cabinet member for children’s services, Cllr Katy Cole, said: “Peterborough is a city I love and Cllr Nick Thulbourn was a well respected, kind and hard working councillor and I am sad that he has passed away.
“As a new councillor back in 2023 he was always someone you could ask for advice. Thank you Nick.
“My sincere condolences, thoughts and prayers go out to all of his family at this time.”
