Two people in hospital after Durham Road, Birtley crash

Emergency services were called to Durham Road, Birtley, at around 11.45am on Friday (May 22), following reports of a road traffic incident.

Two ambulances were sent to the scene, and two people were taken to hospital.

One person was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, and another to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead.

Images from the scene showed police cordoning off the road, while ambulances could be seen working inside the cordon.

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) said: “We were called to a road traffic incident on Durham Road, Birtley at 11.46am on 22 May.

“We dispatched two double-crewed ambulances and a specialist paramedic.

“One patient was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, and one patient was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.”
