The incident took place on Thursday (January 8) afternoon in Portland, Oregon, with FBI leading investigation
Two more individuals have been shot by ICE officers in the United States. The customs and border protection agents were involved in the shooting in Portland, which follows the fatal shooting of a woman in Minneapolis.
The incident occurred on Thursday (January 8) afternoon, as confirmed by Portland City councillors. The shootings happened near the junction of East Burnside and 141st Avenue, reports the Mirror.
Portland City Council President Elana Pirtle-Guiney has indicated that she understands both individuals remain alive, though no further updates on their conditions have been provided. According to ABC, the FBI is now heading up an investigation.
This shooting comes amidst widespread anti-ICE demonstrations across America, including in Portland, sparked by the fatal shooting of a 37 year old woman in her vehicle. Protesters assembled swiftly following Wednesday’s shooting, and a vigil was organised for Renee Good as crowds call for public opposition to immigration enforcement officers.
Ms Good was fatally shot by an ICE officer as she attempted to drive away on a snow-covered residential road whilst officers conducted an operation connected to the administration’s immigration enforcement drive. Vice President JD Vance has described Ms Good’s death as “a tragedy of her own making”
Speaking at the White House, Mr Vance stated he wasn’t concerned about prejudging the investigation into Ms Good’s killing, commenting on the footage he’d reviewed from Wednesday’s incident: “What you see is what you get in this case.”
He asserted that Ms Good clearly accelerated her vehicle towards the officer and struck him. Footage of the incident fails to conclusively demonstrate whether the vehicle made contact with the officer.
The Vice President described her as “brainwashed” and “a victim of left-wing ideology”.
He continued: “I can believe that her death is a tragedy, while also recognising that it’s a tragedy of her own making and a tragedy of the far left who has marshalled an entire movement – a lunatic fringe – against our law enforcement officers.”
Minneapolis mayor Jacob Frey stated on Wednesday that video evidence of the shooting undermines claims the officer acted in self-defence, calling such arguments “garbage”. In contrast, President Trump has alleged that Ms Good “viciously ran over” the Ice officer.
Trump has dispatched federal law enforcement personnel and National Guard troops as part of his aggressive stance on crime and immigration in Democrat-led cities. Trump administration officials have dismissed assertions from Democrats and Minnesota authorities that the president’s deployment of immigration enforcement officers in American cities has been incendiary and must cease.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt declared on Thursday that Ms Good’s death was “a result of a large, sinister left-wing movement”. Leavitt stated: “The Trump administration will redouble our efforts to get the worst of the worst criminal, illegal alien killers, rapists and peadophiles off of American streets.”
