Savvy gamers who head on over to the Epic Games Store can find both Styx: Master of Shadows and Styx: Shards of Darkness available to claim for absolutely nothing. Best of all, you get to keep them indefinitely, so it’s worth doing even if you don’t fancy playing them right now.

These two games launched in 2014 and 2017 respectively, but still hold up really well by today’s standards. They follow the story of a goblin called Styx who’s hell-bent on stealing powerful substances to enhance his abilities.

There’s a heavy emphasis on stealth in the Styx games with the character tasked with sneaking and stabbing his way through enemy encampments. RPG elements allow the player to upgrade their abilities as they see fit, speccing into a playstyle that feels right for them.

The two games are developed by Cyanide Studio, which has a third installment in the series coming next month on February 19. While it’s likely possible to play the new game without much prior knowledge of the first two, it can’t hurt to give them a try – especially since they’re free right now.

Both Master of Shadows and Shards of Darkness sit at a ‘Very Positive’ rating on Steam with players complimenting their dedication to true stealth gameplay.

“Styx Master of Shadows is a rare game that commits to pure stealth, without being power fantasy or an action pretending to be stealth. And while it is an undeniably janky experience, Styx has a surprising amount of heart beneath all of that rough exterior,” writes one honest reviewer.

A second review reads: “It’s a so-so story line but heck’n good on the multiple ways to progress a level from A to B stealth challenge. Entertaining game, good graphics for how old it was, and bug free. Well worth a pickup.”

Plenty of gamers say that the second game in the series is a big step up over the first. “Overall, Shards of Darkness turned me into a real fan of the franchise,” says one Styx fan. “It takes the formula of simple stealth gameplay and packs it into awesome, intricate levels. If you like stealth games, you absolutely have to try this one.”

Gamers looking to grab these two stealth games for free will need to be quick. They’ll remain free to claim on the Epic Games Store until January 22 at 4PM GMT.
