The council plans to bring more traders into the market

A weekly market that takes place in a Cambridgeshire town is changing ownership. The market in St Neots takes place every Thursday in the Market Square, which has undergone a controversial £8 million revamp.

Locals told CambridgeshireLive they thought the new square was ‘plain’ and a ‘waste of money’ earlier this year. The renewed square included changes to parking and landscaping, as well as creating a community area.

Huntingdonshire District Council (HDC) is set to take over the market, which is currently run by Wendy Fair. The council thanked Wendy Fair for its “many years of service and longstanding contribution to the St Neots market”.

Executive councillor for economy, regeneration and housing at HDC, Councillor Sam Wakeford said: “We are delighted to be taking on the management of the weekly market and look forward to supporting its growth.

“The market is an important part of the town’s identity, and we are committed to developing new opportunities for traders and delivering a vibrant experience for residents and visitors.”

HDC will work closely with the town council to deliver a varied programme of events in the Market Square. Further details will be shared in the coming months.
