Van becomes wedged under Skinny Bridge, Darlington

The van is the latest to have become stuck under the bridge on Parkside in Darlington, locally known as the Skinny Bridge.

It goes under the East Coast Mainline and the blockage forced all trains to be halted on Monday (November 24) morning, sparking delays of up to 45 minutes.

The van appeared to have scraped the left under side of the bridge and became wedged between the wall and kerb.

Disruption was expected until 11am, but the van has since been removed and all lines have re-opened.

A National Rail spokesperson said: “Lines have reopened following a road vehicle colliding with a bridge between Darlington and Durham.

“Trains running between Darlington and Newcastle may still be cancelled, revised or delayed by up to 45 minutes whilst service recovers.”
