Covey is seeking more people to support its Intandem programme helping young people in the care system.

A Hamilton-based charity is urgently seeking new volunteers to meet demand for a mentoring programme supporting children and young people in South Lanarkshire who are living in care or at risk of entering it.

Covey, which stands for Community Volunteers Enabling You, is among the organisations running the Intandem programme – which is Scotland’s only such initiative dedicated to supporting young people in the care system.

It matches trained volunteers with young people who need consistent, supportive relationships and who then help to build confidence, explore interests and overcome challenges, and its growing success means more participants are needed to get involved.

Covey is asking residents across South Lanarkshire to consider getting involved, with a new Intandem training programme beginning in January.

The Hamilton charity says: “Covey supports its volunteers at every step, offering guidance, training, and mentorship to ensure volunteers feel confident and equipped. Anyone with time, patience and a willingness to make a real difference is invited to step forward.

“Demand is growing, and right now there simply aren’t enough volunteer mentors to meet the need.”

Covey volunteer Paula Smith said of the importance of one-to-one mentoring: “Even if I am only helping one child at a time, when they need support, little acts of presence and care can make a lasting difference. It gives them space to express themselves and realise their potential.

“Some people, like me, just want to be there, to offer time, a listening ear, or simply a friendly presence. Everyone has potential and everyone can be someone – I love it when I can help a child or young person see that.”
