Wayne Rooney makes feelings clear on returning to Man Utd as coach | Football

Wayne Rooney would jump at the opportunity to return to Manchester United as a coach, saying it would be a ‘no-brainer’ of a decision.

The Red Devils are reportedly close to appointing Michael Carrick as interim manager until the end of the season.

Ruben Amorim was dismissed as manager earlier this month, with Darren Fletcher stepping in as caretaker boss, but results have not gone well under the Scot’s watch.

A 2-2 draw with Burnley in the Premier League was followed by an FA Cup third round exit at the hands of Brighton at Old Trafford.

Carrick is expected to take over imminently and lead the team for the rest of the season, with a permanent appointment to be made in the summer.

With former Manchester United players managing the club, Rooney would love to return to Old Trafford and get involved as well.

The former England forward believes it is in Manchester United’s best interest to have people who know the club at the helm.

On The Wayne Rooney Show on the BBC, Rooney was asked if he would be interested in joining the coaching staff under Carrick, saying: ‘Of course I would. It’s a no-brainer.

‘I’m not begging a job here by the way. Just so everyone knows, if I was asked to go in of course I would. Appointing the manager is the most important thing.’

On the importance of familiar faces being involved, he continued: ‘Whether Michael goes in or if that’s Fletch [Darren Fletcher] or John O’Shea or myself, it needs people who know the football club.

‘Roy Keane – I know Roy has had his opinions, I said about Roy going in earlier in the season. Having people who know the club, who care for the club and understand what it takes to be a Manchester United player – that’s where the club needs to be.

‘The club has lost its identity, it’s lost that family feel, if you like. Whether it’s Ole [Ole Gunnar Solskjaer] or Michael, this is an opportunity to bring that back, bring the spirit of Manchester United back to the football club.’

Sky Sports reported on Monday night that a ‘broad agreement’ had been reached to bring Carrick in as interim manager for the rest of the current season.

However, there are details still being discussed, including who will be on his backroom staff.

An appointment will be made soon, though, with the Manchester derby coming up this weekend and the hierarchy wanting the new boss to lead training in the days ahead of the big clash.
