Locals described a “major” incident unfolding, with numerous emergency services in attendance
A major rescue operation was launched at a popular Welsh beach after reports of an individual in the water late on Thursday, December 11. Emergency teams were called to Aberavon Beach at 9.45pm, prompting a joint response from Coastguard crews from Port Talbot and Porthcawl, South Wales Police and the Welsh Ambulance Service.
When Coastguard officers arrived at the north pier police had already brought the casualty to safety on the structure. It has been reported that the individual had suffered severe injuries and Coastguard officers provided urgent medical care while preparations were made to move the person to safety.
A rescue helicopter was sent to the scene and a winch paramedic delivered further treatment before the casualty was lifted from the pier. Stay informed on everything Neath Port Talbot by signing up to our newsletter here
Coastguard officers, police, and ambulance staff then worked together to move the injured person from the beach to a waiting ambulance which took the casualty to hospital.
Coastguard teams also set up a safe landing area for the helicopter and helped manage onlookers before standing down at about 12.45am. Port Talbot RNLI was initially called but was stood down before launching. South Wales Police have been contacted.
